I was a little concerned that the gas mileage during my test period would be marginal, at best, considering the fact that a great deal of my driving was "spirited". I was stunned to find that under a week-long lead foot assault, the Caliber averaged 19.1 MPG, with a mix of city and highway driving. Once my fuel economy calculations were completed, I realized it IS possible to own a fun little performance car with the added perk of less out-of-pocket expenses for fuel.
On the final day of my evaluation, my youngest daughter begged me to pick her up from school with the SRT4. As I approached her elementary school, I was stopped at a light when the stylish lines of the Caliber SRT4 attracted an enthusiastic crowd of high school students. I lowered the window, and a teenage boy yelled "That is one SWEET car!” Three others snapped pictures with their camera phones. As I drove away from the light, I smiled at the attention the SRT4 commanded while not even in motion.
So what did I determine at the end of my seven days with the SRT4? For starters, I now believe that it is possible for a muscle car purist like me to fall in love with a front-wheel drive turbocharged vehicle (and I did). At just under $23,000, the Caliber SRT4 delivers unparalleled performance, at a stellar bargain price. Street and Racing Technology has delivered once again, producing a tuner-segment conqueror that looks every bit as great as it performs. This little beast has proven that it doesn't take eight cylinders and rear-wheel drive to be one mean performance car. It simply takes a group of world class engineers with the ability to develop fresh ideas, as well as the audacity to show the enthusiasts that *anything* is possible.
