Friday afternoon in yet another tragic and senseless string of events, our state lost long time Civic leader former State Legislator Cal Holman 76.  Calvin served the residents of Arizona from 1975 to 1985 in the state legislature.

Cal had a passion for politics and it continued after his retirement, it continued in fact until he was tragically lost in a horrific crash that involved two motorists striking his classic white 1973 Camero.

The police report states:  Investigators were able to confirm witness accounts that the Mustang and Mercedes were speeding on Scottsdale Road. Estimated speeds are above 70 mph for both vehicles. (Scottsdale Road is posted 45mph).  Witnesses reported that 2 cars were traveling north on Scottsdale Road at a high rate of speed and struck a third car turning left at Eastwood Drive.  VanBrakel Driver of the white Mercedes sedan was arrested when he was released from SHC-Shea at 4:40 PM. Travis J. Aronica, Drive of the black Ford Mustang was arrested when he was released from SCH-Osborn at 6:05 PM. Both are being held in custody on one count each of 2nd Degree Murder.

Your Clubs wishes to extend our heart felt condolences to Calvin’s Wife Liz and their family and friends.

Tragic events like this are why I have spent the last two years working to put into effect an anti street racing program.  I have said through all my planning that if I could save one life it all would be worth it.  I most certainly wish the first could have been Calvin’s.

What can one person really do about the street racing problem?  I started by researching night after night and taking notes.  Then I cam up with a basic concept once I had it all written out I made one phone call.

One phone call; that was all it took to schedule a meeting with Ed Medrano from Chrysler.  We scheduled a dinner meeting to discuss my concerns and my ideas. One dinner; was all it took to get a commitment from Ed to be involved in what ever we could do to effect a change, suddenly I had the support of one corporation.

One Corporation;   Actually the “New Chrysler” Sales District Manager-Tucson Mr. Ed Medrano has been working very hard to help.  Ed takes the street racing problem just as seriously as I do and he has made a commitment to help in any way he can.

To get my program off the planning table and into place I have teamed up with two other like minded auto enthusiasts to form Your Clubs LLC.  Kenyatta Goins, a well known automotive designer and event host.  He brings the experience needed in the event planning and execution portion of the programs.   Chris Martin a fellow car enthusiast that has over 15 years of computer program and code writing experience.  Chris builds the website and the forum pages for each club that we host.  I am left the duties of sales, marketing and development.

Starting a point series to provide track time to replace street time for performance enthusiasts of all ages is a costly venture.  The cost however is relatively low when balanced against the value of people like Calvin.  It is the hope of Your Clubs and Ed Madrano that we raise awareness of just how dangerous street racing is and replace street time with track time as often as we can.

How much are Chrysler and their dealers putting into this effort?  We have four events in planning right now.  We are looking ahead to a 2009 season as well.

It all started with one idea, one call and one Corporation.  Thanks to the “New Chrysler” and Ed Madrinos concern for public safety and their customers well being we have a start.  This problem is very large and we are working hard to build a real impact.  It will take more one corporate interest and involvement to keep this pilot program, an effort to replace street time with track time growing.   Your Clubs is happy to be able to announce our four events for 2008 at the Tempe Dodges Rumble in the Desert II January 19th 2008.  We invite you to join us at Firebird international Raceway for a day of Drag racing and Car shows.  We will be registering participants for the point’s series at the event.  www.yourclubs.net  What can you do to help?
